WOOD DESTROYING ORGANISMS (performed by 2020PI)
Termites are by far the most damaging wood destroying insect to attack our homes. Their activity results in damage and control costs that exceed $1.5 billion per year nationally and tens of millions of dollars here in Florida. Termites can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home if not detected. Beetles, bees, wasps and ants can also attack wood and cause structural damage.
In nature, termites are very beneficial insects because they return dead trees to the soil as nutrients. Unfortunately, termites do not distinguish between wood in your home and a tree in the forest. Both subterranean and drywood termites are active in the First Coast region. But the most common form of WDO that we encounter is wood decay.
Decay always begins with wet wood. Typically the saturation point of wood is 28%. When the moisture content reaches that point the wood is susceptible to fungi growth. These fungi first soften the wood by secreting enzymes then consume it.
At F.P.D. we are licensed through the Florida State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to inspect for termites, wood decay and other forms of wood destroying organisms. We are not a pest control company. This means that we can inspect for WDO but we are not licensed to apply chemicals to treat for them.
